“There is a balm in Gilead, to make the wounded whole…” goes the old spiritual. The walking wounded in Lanford Wilson’s sprawling play are the denizens of New York’s lower East Side, who drift in and out of an all-night café. Boozers and losers, searchers and runners, whores and junkies, con men and hit men all jostle each other looking for a cup of coffee and a shot at redemption.
