Clemma, an African-American housekeeper, recalls one idyllic afternoon in the summer of 1953 at the Hines family's retreat in the Poconos. Burt Hines is recovering from a second heart attack and looking forward to the arrival of the ex-wife he still loves. Meanwhile Burt's daughter Josie has just broken her engagement to Ken, an intense law student, while pining for Ray, the aspiring writer with whom she had a brief affair. As the afternoon advances and the tangled web of relationships unfold, Clemma must face an unresolved past.
